Amberol is a music player for Linux desktops with a deliberately narrow scope: it plays the audio files handed to it and makes no attempt to catalogue a collection. There is no library to scan, no tag editor, and no database of ratings or play counts; files and folders are added to a playlist and played from there.
The interface is built around the current queue and the track in progress, with the usual transport controls, shuffle and repeat, and cover art where the files carry it. Because nothing is indexed, a listening session is defined by what the user puts into the window rather than by a catalogue accumulated over time. That suits playing through an album or a folder of recordings, and suits far less well browsing tens of thousands of tracks by artist or genre.
Amberol is written by Emmanuele Bassi, targets the Linux desktop, and is distributed under the GPL-3.0-or-later.
