nip4 is an image processing application structured around a spreadsheet interface. Instead of traditional menu-driven editing or node-based graphs, users manipulate visual data by arranging operations within a grid of cells. Each cell can hold an image, a number, a string, or a mathematical expression that computes a new image from existing inputs. This design allows for rapid experimentation with image filters, color adjustments, and geometric transformations while keeping a clear record of the processing steps.

The program is built for the Linux operating system and utilizes the VIPS library underneath, which handles large images efficiently by processing them in tiles rather than loading entire files into system memory. Because computation is demand-driven, the software only calculates pixels as they are needed for display or export, reducing processing time for complex operations.
