NetAnim is an offline network animator designed to visualize packet traces generated by the ns-3 network simulator. Running on Linux systems, the utility reads XML trace files produced during a simulation run and renders the topology, node movements, and packet transmissions across the network. Users can playback the recorded communication sessions, step through events frame by frame, and examine packet flows between individual nodes to understand protocol interactions and routing behavior.
The software focuses exclusively on post-simulation analysis rather than real-time execution monitoring. It allows investigators to inspect node positions, monitor queue lengths, and track the delivery status of packets across wired and wireless topologies defined in the simulation script. The interface provides standard playback controls such as pause, fast-forward, and zoom, alongside statistical summaries of packet drops and throughput over the recorded timeline.
