LibreWolf Web Browser

Open sourceMPL-2.0

Highlights

  • Firefox fork with telemetry and crash reporting removed at build time and no sponsored tiles or Pocket on the new tab page.
  • Fingerprinting resistance is on by default, which normalises reported window size, timezone and fonts.
  • Cookies and site data are cleared on exit unless a site is placed on an exception list.
  • uBlock Origin is bundled; extensions and interface behaviour otherwise follow upstream Firefox.
  • Releases are built by the LibreWolf project, so updates follow the corresponding Firefox release rather than arriving with it.

About this application

LibreWolf is a fork of Firefox that ships with privacy settings already turned up instead of leaving them to the user. Telemetry and crash reporting are removed at build time, sponsored tiles and Pocket are absent from the new tab page, and the default search engine is one that does not build a profile of the person searching.

The configuration is where it differs most. Fingerprinting resistance is enabled, cookies and site data are cleared when the browser closes unless a site is added to an exception list, and uBlock Origin is bundled. These defaults have visible costs: fingerprinting resistance reports a standard window size, timezone and font set, so pages can render at an unexpected size and time-sensitive sites can show the wrong hour, while clearing data on exit means logins do not survive a restart. Both can be relaxed in the settings.

Because it tracks Firefox, extensions and general interface behaviour match upstream. Releases are produced by the LibreWolf project rather than by Mozilla, so an update follows the corresponding Firefox release rather than arriving with it.
