About this application
Hashes takes a hash string and reports which hashing algorithms could have produced it. Given a value copied from a checksum file, a log, or a database dump, it compares the input against the forms known for various algorithms and lists the ones that match, so the user can decide which tool to reach for next. Its stated scope is identification of algorithms, not the computation or recovery of hash values.
The program is a Linux application published by zefr0x under the GPL-3.0-only license. Because identification rests on the shape of the string rather than on any knowledge of the original input, distinct algorithms with the same output length frequently produce the same signature. The result should therefore be read as a set of candidates ordered by plausibility rather than as a single definitive answer.
The usual context is forensics, incident response, or puzzle and competition work, where an unlabelled digest has to be classified before further processing can be planned.
