About this application
Athena: Firewall DNS AdBlocker filters network traffic on Android at the DNS level, intercepting name lookups for advertising and tracking hosts so those requests do not resolve. Alongside the DNS filter it includes a firewall for controlling which applications are allowed to reach the network.
The application offers three ways of operating, which lets it adapt to how much access the device grants it. With root it can work at the system level; with Shizuku it uses the ADB-based permission bridge instead of root; and in VPN mode it registers itself as a local VPN endpoint so traffic passes through it without any elevated privileges. That last path is what makes the firewall usable on an unmodified device, and it occupies the single VPN slot Android provides, so it cannot run at the same time as another VPN client.
It is published by Kin69 under the GPL-3.0-only licence and targets Android exclusively.
