Organic Maps draws its maps from OpenStreetMap data and keeps them on the device. You download the regions you need ahead of time, after which map browsing, place search and route calculation all run locally, with nothing requested over the network while you travel. The rendering leans towards outdoor use: footpaths, cycle routes and marked trails are drawn rather than buried under the road network.
Routing covers driving, walking and cycling, with turn-by-turn guidance and spoken directions. Places can be looked up by name or by category, and a result shows the opening hours, phone number and other attributes that OpenStreetMap contributors have entered for it. Bookmarks are grouped into lists, and bookmark collections and recorded tracks are imported and exported as KML files.
The project is a fork of Maps.me, continued after the original changed direction. It asks for no account and shows no advertising. The trade-off is inherent to the approach: the map is only as current as your last regional download, and any gap in OpenStreetMap coverage shows up directly in the app.
