Joplin is a note-taking and to-do application that stores notes as Markdown inside notebooks. Notebooks nest, notes carry tags, and a to-do item is a note with a checkbox and an optional alarm. A split view shows the Markdown source and its rendered output side by side; a rich text mode is available for people who would rather not see the markup.
Notes live in a local database and are synchronised through a storage backend that you choose: Nextcloud, WebDAV, Dropbox, OneDrive, S3-compatible storage or Joplin Cloud. Because the server only ever holds files, end-to-end encryption can be switched on so the sync target stores ciphertext. Attachments and images travel with the notes.
A browser extension, the Web Clipper, saves pages or selections into a notebook. Plugins extend the desktop application, and there is a terminal client alongside the desktop and mobile builds. Notes export as Markdown, JEX archives, HTML or PDF.
