Freeplane is a mind mapping application: a central node branches into child nodes, and each node holds a short label plus optional detail text, notes, icons and attributes. Branches fold and unfold, so a large map can be read at whatever depth is useful at the time. It is a Java application and runs wherever a Java runtime is available.
Beyond drawing the map, nodes carry structured data. Attributes are key-value pairs attached to a node; conditional styles change how a node is drawn based on its attributes, text or icons, which turns a map into something closer to a small data view than a picture. Nodes link to other nodes, to files and to web addresses, and a node can be given a formula whose result is recalculated from other nodes.
Scripting in Groovy and add-ons extend the application for repeated jobs. Maps are stored as .mm XML files, and export covers images, HTML and PDF among others. Freeplane grew out of FreeMind and opens maps written by it.
