A Geographic Information System

QGIS is a desktop geographic information system for viewing, editing and analysing spatial data. It reads vector formats such as Shapefile, GeoPackage, GeoJSON and GML and raster formats including GeoTIFF, and it connects to spatial databases like PostGIS and SpatiaLite as well as to OGC services — WMS, WMTS, WFS — and plain XYZ tile layers.
Each layer is drawn by a renderer configured on it: a single symbol, categories taken from an attribute, classes graduated over a numeric range, or rules written as expressions. Labelling, the attribute table, an expression engine and a field calculator cover the tabular side. Editing supports digitising with snapping and geometry checks.
Analysis runs through the Processing toolbox, which puts native algorithms next to wrapped GDAL and GRASS GIS tools behind one dialog, while the model designer chains them into reusable workflows. Print layouts compose maps with legends, scale bars and north arrows, and an atlas iterates over a coverage layer to produce one sheet per feature. A Python console and a plugin repository extend the program.
