TeXstudio is an editor for LaTeX documents. It does not typeset anything itself: a TeX distribution such as TeX Live or MiKTeX must already be installed, and TeXstudio calls its programs and reads their output. What it provides is the surroundings — editing, building and error reading in one window.
The editor completes commands, environments, citation keys and reference labels drawn from the document and its bibliography, highlights syntax, folds environments, and checks spelling and references as you type. A structure pane lists sections, labels and included files for navigation. Dialog assistants build tables, formulas, tabulars and document skeletons for people who would rather not remember the syntax.
The PDF viewer is built in and linked to the source through SyncTeX, so clicking in the source jumps to the matching place in the output and back again. Build configurations select the compiler — pdflatex, xelatex, lualatex — along with bibliography and index passes, and the log is parsed so errors become clickable lines.
