AirMessage

AirMessage carries iMessage conversations onto an Android phone by splitting the work across two machines. A Mac stays signed in to the Apple account and does the actual sending and receiving; the Android app is the client that connects to it, shows the conversation threads and passes outgoing messages back for delivery.

The Mac requirement is a hard dependency rather than a convenience. A Mac must be present, powered on and reachable over the network for the phone to send or receive anything, so the arrangement suits people who already keep a Mac running and want to read and reply from an Android handset instead of switching devices. Without access to a Mac there is nothing for the client to pair with.
