Vorta is a desktop front-end for BorgBackup. Borg itself is a command-line tool that stores deduplicated, compressed and optionally encrypted archives in a repository; Vorta puts a Qt window around it so that repositories, source folders and schedules are set up by clicking rather than by writing cron entries and shell wrappers.
A profile holds one repository plus the directories to back up, exclusion patterns for caches and build output, the compression choice, and a retention policy deciding how many daily, weekly and monthly archives survive pruning. Repositories can sit on a local disk or on a remote host reached over SSH. Backups can run on a schedule, and progress is reported from a tray icon.
Existing archives are listed with their sizes and creation times. An archive can be mounted read-only through FUSE, so recovering a file means copying it out with a file manager, and two archives can be compared to see what changed between them. Vorta does not replace Borg: Borg has to be present, and the repositories it creates stay readable by the plain command-line tool.
