GnuCash is a double-entry accounting application for personal and small-business bookkeeping. Every transaction moves money between two or more accounts, so the books balance by construction. The account tree covers assets, liabilities, income, expenses and equity, and each account opens into a register laid out like a paper chequebook, with a running balance on every line.
Beyond day-to-day entry it handles scheduled and recurring transactions, reconciliation against bank statements, and budgets. Investment accounts track shares and funds across multiple currencies, and prices can be retrieved automatically through Finance::Quote. The business side adds customers and vendors, invoices and bills, accounts receivable and payable, and tax tables.
Data is kept either in GnuCash’s own compressed XML file or in SQLite, MySQL or PostgreSQL. Statements import from QIF, OFX/QFX and CSV, and online banking is available through AqBanking where the bank supports it. Reports and charts are generated from the ledger and can be exported or saved as a customised set.
